Only 3.25" long, the Calliope Hummingbird is North America's smallest bird, and the smallest long-distance migrating bird in the world. It breeds in the northwestern US and SW Canada and spends its winters in south-central Mexico. The discovery of a Calliope by Ben Cacace on November 19th in Wagner Park (located at the southern tip of Manhattan) marked the second known record for this species in New York State. This sighting was included in the NYSARC report for 2002. My photos were taken on November 24th, the last day it was seen. I used an Olympus C-2100 digital camera with a B-300 1.7x teleconverter attached. Total effective focal length (in 35mm terms): 646mm. See EXIF link for more details.
